Graduation Ideas

It must be the event planner in me, but I love Graduation! I have never planned a group graduation before, and that is what I’m doing this year, with all three of my tutoring students. Sometimes, in the home education realm, we think we need to replicate what the public school system has done because of our own familiarity with that system. Hopefully, we can recognize this occasion as an event that can uniquely transition students into adulthood, while giving friends and family members a glimpse into our lives. Graduation is just as much for the parents as the student! No one knows the struggles and the joys like a home educator.

A few simple ideas to mark the end of a student’s home education. It doesn’t have to be “just” another day of school.

  • Toast the end of the day with sparkling juice. Our family likes to toast with root beer in a glass bottle.

  • Have a special lunch, perhaps with a guest at the end of the school session.

  • Take some time to commend the graduate on their accomplishments and strengths.

  • Take a photo. Perhaps add some favorite books or a big stack of books read.

Graduation Ceremony Ideas

  • Student chosen special music or song

  • A Recitation Piece

  • Display of a well written essay or poem

  • Expressions of gratitude from the student to the educating parent, perhaps the presentation of a flower

  • Prayers spoken for the graduate

  • Speech by the graduate about some of the great ideas that have impacted their thoughts and hopes for the future

  • Presentation of diploma

  • Speech by the parent for the student

  • Celebrate with food!

  • Presentation of Gifts

However you choose to honor yourself and your unique individual, may it be a blessing! You both persisted and persevered unto completion. What an investment of time and effort! I’m proud of you :-)

Share your ideas! We would love to hear them.
